Head, Energy Industry PartnershipsGoogleAaron Berndt is Head of Energy Industry Partnerships at Google, where he leads the team that works with utility partners to develop customer-focused energy programs that leverage Google Nest products. Prior to joining Google, Aaron was a leader in PG&E's Customer Energy Solutions team, with responsibility for the delivery of key products and programs in PG&E's portfolio. Aaron holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and an M.B.A from U.C. Berkeley Haas School of Business.

PartnerModern EnergyAngela Fox is a partner at Modern Energy where she successfully built and oversees a team that works with wholesale energy market operators and regulators to bring new clean energy assets to energy markets. Before joining Modern, Angela led business development teams with over 40 clients including USAID at an international development non-profit. Angela also worked in operations for a defense consulting firm that supervises global contractors working with DOD, DOS, and foreign agencies. She graduated from Duke University with distinction and now lives in Durham, N.C. with family.

Director, Legal and Regulatory AffairsWill is responsible for legal, regulatory, and stakeholder matters at Rodan. In this role, Will manages a broad variety of corporate functions, from commercial contracting, to strategic acquisitions, to risk management.Prior to joining Rodan, Will practiced with McCarthy Tétrault LLP’s national energy and power group in Toronto. Before that, Will served as a Policy and Parliamentary Affairs Advisor to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and practiced with Stewart McKelvey in Atlantic Canada.Will is called to the bar in Ontario and Prince Edward Island, and holds bachelor’s and law degrees from Dalhousie University.

Vice President, PolicyIcetec Energy ServicesDoug is the Vice President of Policy at Icetec Energy Services, a firm that empowers energy managers to optimize their on-site load, distributed generation, and battery storage assets to meet organizational goals, minimize energy costs, and reduce carbon emissions.Prior to Icetec he spent 18 years as a Principal Associate with Synapse Energy Economics, where he represented the interests of consumer advocate, environmental advocate, and clean energy clients at numerous NEPOOL, PJM, NYISO, and Alberta ISO stakeholder meetings. As a recognized leader in the role of demand resources in wholesale energy markets, he was the vice chair of NEPOOL’s Alternative Resources sector for 8 of the past 10 years. Prior to joining Synapse, Doug was the head of the West Coast research arm of a website hosting company, and spent seven years as a technology consultant for Ernst & Young. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.

Travis Kavulla

Vice President, Regulatory AffairsNRG

Travis Kavulla is vice president for regulatory affairs at NRG, guiding the company’s regulatory policy related to wholesale and retail electricity, gas, and environmental-attribute markets at both the federal and state level. In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Travis is a lecturer at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy, where he teaches a course on utility regulation and electricity markets.

Travis joined NRG from the R Street Institute, where he led the think tank's energy program. Previously, he served eight years as commissioner at the Montana Public Service Commission, including as chairman, and was President of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners. In addition to his service as a state regulator, he sat on the advisory council of the Electric Power Research Institute and led the steering committee responsible for electric transmission planning for the northern Rocky Mountain region of the Western United States. He also helped found and served as an independent member of the governing body of one of North America’s largest electricity markets, the Western Energy Imbalance Market.

Travis received his bachelor’s degree in history from Harvard University and a master’s, also in history, at the University of Cambridge, where he was a Gates Scholar. Travis lives in Maryland with his wife and three children.

Vice President, Energy MarketsVoltusEmily Orvis is the Vice President of Energy Markets at Voltus, where she leads the team that manages distributed energy resources in all nine North American wholesale markets. Before Voltus, Emily worked at a small startup building solar-powered microgrids for energy access in emerging markets, and also worked at Earthjustice, the non-profit environmental law organization. Emily holds a BA from Columbia University and a Master of Environmental Management degree from Yale University.

Katherine Hamilton

Executive DirectorAEMAKatherine Hamilton is Executive Director of Advanced Energy Management Alliance, an association of providers and supporters of Distributed Energy Resources, including Demand Response and Advanced Energy Management, united to overcome barriers to nationwide use of demand-side resources. Katherine is also Chair of 38 North Solutions and has for the second year been named one of the 500 most influential people in Washington, DC, by Washingtonian magazine. As an international policy expert, Katherine was an original and longtime host of The Energy Gang podcast and is now a regular contributor to The Carbon Copy podcast. Katherine has led several councils of the World Economic Forum as a global policy and technology thought leader and is currently a Senior Executive in Clean Power and Electrification. She is Vice Chair of the board of Greentown Labs, with start-up hubs in Somerville, MA and Houston, TX and serves as a Non-Executive Director at Smarter Grid Solutions. Katherine served as President of the GridWise Alliance, advocating for smart grid funding in the Obama Administration’s Recovery Act. Prior to that role, Katherine was a policy advisor for Good Energies, Inc., a private investment company with a portfolio in clean energy technologies of nearly $6 billion. She co-directed the American Bioenergy Association, working with the states of Maryland and New Jersey to develop renewable portfolio standards. At the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Katherine led buildings research and then managed government relations in Washington, DC. Katherine spent a decade at Virginia Power, designing grids and managing commercial customer projects. Katherine studied electrical engineering at Northern Virginia Community College and holds degrees from Cornell University and the Sorbonne. Katherine was previously profiled and listed on the #Solar100 board by kWh Analytics and received a Cleanie Award as Entrepreneur of the Year.

Malka Friedman-Rosner

Malka Friedman-Rosner is Manager of Operations and Client Administration at 38 North, where she oversees the workflow of the team, tracking pertinent deadlines and ensuring needs of the clients are met in the highest regard. Malka joins 38 North after over ten years of programmatic, administrative, and project management experience including, most recently, a 3.5 year tenure at a leading U.S. venture capital firm where she served as an integral part of the Investor Relations team. Malka graduated from The George Washington University in 2005, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Art History.
