Advanced Energy Management Alliance Releases Options to Develop Untapped Resource and Engage Consumers

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 12, 2018) The Advanced Energy Management Alliance (AEMA) today released a white paper, [Download not found], designed to inform state regulators, grid operators, and utilities and expand markets for demand-side resources offered by consumers.

“AEMA has taken a leadership position in offering solutions to untapped state markets in the MISO region,” said Katherine Hamilton, Executive Director of the Advanced Energy Management Alliance. “This white paper provides a roadmap to MISO-based regulators and utilities for better utilizing demand response to the benefit of all consumers.”

Demand Response allows consumers to reduce their energy use during peak times of energy demand or when system reliability is threatened in exchange for payments that reflect the value of that reduction. Demand response provides cost savings to everyone who uses electricity and is a proven resource that enables more efficient and cleaner operation of the electricity grid,

While several states in the MISO region have legacy interruptible demand response programs, there is increasing recognition that programs need to evolve to meet future grid challenges. The white paper finds: “To create shared value for utilities and consumers, states should take near-term action to create robust DR programs where DR is lacking and evolve DR program design in territories that have had the same tariffs for over a decade.”

The paper emphasizes the desire for collaboration between utilities, DR providers, and customers, and highlights a tariff in Indiana as an example of this collaboration, as well as the option for bilateral contracting.

“We hope that this white paper is used as intended—to inform and offer options for regulators and utilities seeking to partner with third party providers and consumers. AEMA members seek to grow our businesses while giving consumers additional choices and providing cost-effective, environmentally sustainable services to the electric grid.”
